The Authentic Self

When we, as human beings, look out at the world, we cannot help but wonder what we are doing here and what, if anything, is our purpose. We experience ourselves operating in a physical world reality and yet are also aware of ourselves as having mental and emotional experiences. You, too, may be asking, “Who am I? Why am I here?”

Spiritual Beings With Spiritual Purpose

The purpose of USM's education in Spiritual Psychology is for people to develop greater awareness of themselves as spiritual beings who have a body but are not their body, who have a mind but are not their mind, and who have emotions but are not their emotions. USM is nurturing the birth of the new human. - Barbara Marx HubbardWe refer to this state of awareness beyond the mind, body, and emotions as the Authentic Self, which experiences Love, Peace, Joy, Compassion, and Wisdom. At USM, we learn to awaken to and reside in the Authentic Self more and more of the time. The natural consequence of this progression is to live life more in alignment with the expression of our God-given attributes and gifts.

At the University of Santa Monica, we recognize the fundamental spiritual reality and purpose of human existence and define Spiritual Psychology as the study and practice of the art and science of human evolution in consciousness. And whether we know our purpose or not, the assumption of purpose provides us with a universal value system independent of culture and religion. Such a system recognizes the unique contribution of every individual based on the premise of each person's God-given right to realize his or her spiritual destiny. It is exciting to consider the possibility that, through Spiritual Psychology, humans will at last find their rightful place among the stars.
